CompTIA Security+ is the first security certification IT professionals should earn. It establishes the core knowledge required of any cybersecurity role and provides a springboard to intermediate-level cybersecurity jobs. CompTIA Security+ is a globally trusted, vendor-neutral certification that validates the baseline skills necessary to perform core security functions and pursue an IT security career. The A+ certification is an entry-level professional credential that is the industry standard for those wishing to launch their IT career. The complete bundle offers guidance to help you triumphantly become certified in CompTIA A+, Network+, Security+, Server+, CompTIA Linux+, and more. You can adjust your study strategy based on your performance on practice tests.
No matter how you choose to prepare for the certification exam, here are some tips to help you do your best. You’ll find two types of questions on the latest version of the Security+ exam, traditional multiple-choice questions and performance-based questions (PBQs). PBQs test your ability to solve security problems in a simulated environment; you might be asked to install and configure a firewall or set up a wireless network, for example. CompTIA recommends that you have two years of experience in IT administration with a security focus.

Individual exams are not necessarily vendor-neutral and represent a “step up” from existing CompTIA certification programs in data, CompTIA Security+ Lessons cybersecurity and IT infrastructure. Planned for launch in 2024 is the new DataX certification and learning program aimed at data scientists. Aligning with this new vision, the current CompTIA CASP+ certification will be updated and rebranded as SecurityX this year. As technology and cybersecurity threats continue to evolve, IT professionals must evolve along with them.
Being self-taught is a hallmark of many successful cybersecurity professionals. Individuals who have taken the initiative to learn about infrastructure and networking through online courses, tutorials and hands-on projects demonstrate a proactive approach to their professional growth. These candidates may not have formal degrees in cybersecurity, but their self-taught skills or on-the-job training and experience can be just as valuable.

Regardless of how you choose to take the exam, you will be required to agree with the CompTIA Candidate Agreement.
Beyond that, there are different requirements for online testing vs. in-person. The Security+ performance-based questions come in various formats and require students to perform a specific task or solve a problem in a simulated environment. It is highly suggested that students obtain the CompTIA Network+, or have equivalent knowledge, beforehand. This certification will help build foundational knowledge that can be applied to the Security+ exam. Students are not required to possess any other certifications before taking the Security+ exam.
